theory:
I found engawa an interesting concept and decided to choose it as the theory for my architecture. The word "engawa" comes from Japan and refers to an "in-between space mediating outside and inside".
It is in the form of a veranda and functions as an informal social area. As Engawa makes the building "fade into nature, frame and filter the views over the garden", it extends beyond the spatal constraints. Besides, the moving parts of engawa (sliding glass facade or curtain walls) allow the interior to buffer climatic and temperature change.
In my architecture, I plan to make my architecture in the form of engawa. By taking advantage of height differences of those overlapped blocks, interesting spaces like rooftop gardens and channel galleries will be created. Sliding screens will also be applied to the engawa in case of terrible weather, and curtains will fly in the air while breezing, which provides opportunities for movement. Also, as my architecture is above the driveway, it will induce an interaction between students above and pedestrians and drivers below.
3-5 keywords
engawa, in-between space, climate changes, connection
Thesis:
Engawa is able to adapt climatic change by transforming its medium elements. As an in-between space, it connects and transits the interior and exterior to create multiple interesting medium spaces, and makes an interaction not only between human and nature, also between human in two voids.
Space Breakdown
My design includes spaces for 3 year groups as I believe the artistic atmosphere and communication are significant parts to cultivate an architectural student from the first year, it's an important learning process while appreciating other students' work. Thus, the gallery and common area will take a large space in engawa.
In contrast, a research area and a formal library will not be included as the UNSW library has already existed and more interdisciplinary books can be found in the main library. Researching needs a quiet space that my architecture might not meet that standard as it is in a style of sharing and communicating.

Hero shot: The photograph captures the whole architecture across the drive way as a bridge and clearly illustrates the garden-like landscape campus. It is in a gradient warm-toned color that might bring good mood for pedestrians and drivers, which will be an interesting interation.
Detail shot 1: Except for the gallery, paintings are everywhere, such as above the washroom. Aesthetic appreciation is significant to architectural student and those abstract paintings might bring inspiration and deeper thinking.
Detail shot2: The photograph illustrates the interior of teachers' offices. They are not as serious as normal ones, instead, the horizontal walls are in gradient warm-toned colors that match the outer wall, and the longitudinal walls are in an organic shape.
